This is Jordan for those who want to move through it on foot as much as by road — an eight-day adventure itinerary with Hajjat Tours that combines hiking, wild camping, Bedouin hospitality, and some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Middle East into one deeply immersive journey. It is not a sightseeing tour. It is an experience that gets under Jordan’s skin.
The route opens in Amman with an introduction to the capital’s iconic sites before heading north to Jerash, Ajloun Castle, and the rolling countryside villages of Al Ayoun — where a local homestay lunch and visits to the RSCN Soap House and Calligraphy House offer genuine community connection. Day three moves south to Wadi Numeirah — a hidden canyon of sandstone gorges, freshwater streams, and photogenic rock formations — before arriving at Dana Biosphere Reserve for an overnight in one of Jordan’s most extraordinary natural settings. Day four follows the legendary Dana to Feynan trail — a 14-kilometre hike through the reserve — and continues to Little Petra. Day five is the Petra back door hike, entering through Little Petra and descending to the Monastery before exploring the Treasury and the Siq. The afternoon arrives in Wadi Rum for a night under the desert stars. Day six is a full hiking day in Wadi Rum — 12 to 15 kilometres across dunes, canyons, and rock formations with a Bedouin tea stop included. Day seven brings the Dead Sea for recovery and relaxation. Day eight is departure.
Hajjat Tours has been operating Jordan programs since 2003, and this adventure itinerary draws on two decades of trail knowledge, community relationships, and on-the-ground expertise to deliver an experience that is genuinely off the standard circuit.

4 Hours Before Flight Time
Your adventure with Hajjat Tours begins at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), where our representative will meet and assist you through arrivals and transfer you to your Amman hotel. The afternoon begins immediately — a visit to the Citadel (Jabal al-Qal’a) and the Roman Theatre introduces Amman’s layered history, from the Iron Age kingdom of Rabbath Ammon through the Roman city of Philadelphia to the modern Arab capital it is today. The evening is yours to explore Jordan’s most underrated city. Overnight in Amman.
After breakfast, head north to Jerash — one of the best-preserved Roman cities outside Italy, where the Oval Plaza, the colonnaded Cardo Maximus, and the Temple of Artemis create an archaeological landscape of extraordinary completeness. Continue to Ajloun Castle, the 12th-century fortress of Qal’at Ar-Rabad built by a general of Saladin during the Crusades — a site that tells the Crusader period from the Arab perspective with rare clarity.
From Ajloun, the route takes a quieter, more distinctive turn: a walk through the Al Ayoun countryside villages, where forested hills, olive groves, and traditional stone houses create a landscape far removed from the tourist circuit. Optional stops include a local homestay for a traditional lunch, the RSCN Soap House where local artisans produce natural olive oil soaps, and the Calligraphy House — a community workshop keeping traditional Arabic calligraphy alive. A short local tour of Ajloun village follows before meeting your driver. The route back to Amman passes the ruins of Mar Elyas Church with scenic forested views along the way. Overnight in Amman.
After breakfast, the road heads south to Wadi Numeirah — one of Jordan’s best-kept secrets. This narrow sandstone canyon in the Kerak Governorate is threaded by freshwater streams, studded with natural pools, and flanked by towering cliff walls that create a landscape of intimate, photogenic beauty. A light hike through the wadi is perfect for nature photography and a genuine encounter with Jordan’s wild terrain without the crowds.
From Wadi Numeirah, continue south to Dana Biosphere Reserve — Jordan’s largest nature reserve and one of its most compelling overnight destinations. Dana sits at the edge of a dramatic escarpment above the Wadi Araba, its traditional stone village perched on the clifftop above a landscape of extraordinary ecological richness. The reserve is home to over 800 plant species, 190 bird species, and 37 mammal species — and the evening light on the canyon is a sight in itself. Overnight in Dana.
Today is one of the great hiking days of this itinerary. The Dana to Feynan trail is a 14-kilometre route that descends through the heart of the Dana Biosphere Reserve — from the rugged mountain terrain of the highland reserve down through open desert valleys and ancient wadis to the Feynan Ecolodge, one of the most celebrated eco-tourism destinations in Jordan. The trail passes through landscapes that shift dramatically as altitude drops: juniper and oak giving way to open steppe, then to the warm desert terrain of the lowlands. Ascent: 230 metres. Descent: 1,140 metres. Level: moderate.
After some rest and recovery at Feynan, travel by vehicle to Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) — a charming Nabataean site carved into the cliffs north of Petra, once a thriving caravanserai on the ancient trade routes. Quieter and more atmospheric than Petra itself, Little Petra is an ideal introduction to Nabataean architecture and history. Overnight near Little Petra.
This is the day Petra reveals itself differently. Beginning at Little Petra, the back door hike traverses a rugged and largely uncrowded landscape of rock formations, narrow canyons, and panoramic desert vistas before descending through the Monastery (Ad-Deir) — Petra’s largest monument — and into the heart of the ancient Nabataean city from above. It is a route that offers a completely different perspective on Petra than the standard Siq entrance: more physical, more intimate, and more rewarding for those willing to earn the view.
From the Monastery, descend through the city — the Royal Tombs, the colonnaded street, the Treasury — before exiting through the Siq. In the afternoon, transfer to Wadi Rum — Jordan’s great desert wilderness, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of vast red sand plains and towering sandstone massifs. Arriving as the desert light softens, settle into your Bedouin camp for dinner and a night under the stars. Overnight in Wadi Rum.
A full day in the desert — on foot. Today’s hike covers approximately 12 to 15 kilometres across the extraordinary terrain of Wadi Rum: sand dunes that demand a climb for the views from the top, narrow slot canyons, ancient Thamudic and Nabataean rock inscriptions, and open desert plains that stretch to a horizon of sandstone cliffs. A stop for Bedouin tea and a traditional lunch is built into the day. The connection between Wadi Rum and T.E. Lawrence — the British officer who moved through these sands during the Great Arab Revolt of 1917–18 — is woven into the landscape, and your guide will bring those stories to life. A second night under the desert stars. Overnight in Wadi Rum.
After the physical demands of the previous days, the Dead Sea arrives as the perfect counterpoint. Drive north from Wadi Rum to the lowest point on Earth — 430 metres below sea level — where the water is so dense with salt and minerals that floating requires no effort whatsoever. Apply the famous mineral-rich mud, soak in the therapeutic waters, and spend the afternoon at your resort letting the Dead Sea do what it does best. Overnight at the Dead Sea.
A final morning at leisure — one last float, a long breakfast, or a quiet moment before the drive north to Queen Alia International Airport. Hajjat Tours will arrange your transfer and see you off — leaving you with seven days of Jordan that most visitors never reach.
